💡 Maldives Weather: When to Visit?

A very common question, and almost impossible to answer. Weather in the Maldives has become increasingly unpredictable, largely due to climate change and warming oceans.
Think about the weather in your home country – can you say for certain that there will be zero rain in both the first week of June and the first week of December? Of course not, it’s all about probabilities, and the Maldives is no different!

🌦️ What to Expect (most of the time)

It is hot and humid year-round, and even at midnight in the rain it is around 25°C. It can rain on any day, in any month. Sunshine and showers are the norm, so take your photos whenever the sun pops out 🌤️.

Most rain comes as passing showers or you might get a cloudy afternoon… when you can still get sunburnt! Around 50% of rainfall happens at night, and periods of non-stop, all-day rain are relatively rare.

📅 Seasons Are Blurring

Low season increases the chance of several bad days in a row, but even peak season (Dec–Jan) can occasionally be stormy. Over the last decade, patterns appear to be shifting, with possibly less rain in June and July and more rain towards the end of the year.

⛈️ How Bad Can It Get?

Like anywhere, if you are very unlucky with timing, you might see localised flooding, cancelled ferries, and delayed domestic or international flights. There can be several days of high winds and torrential rain, but this is uncommon. Watching a short-lived thunderstorm on the horizon can be fascinating and memorable. ⛈️

📊 Old Graphs vs Reality

Rainfall and sunshine graphs are often based on older data (Maldives Meteo) and do not fully reflect recent climate changes. 2024 was a good example of just how unreliable patterns have become [PDF report] :

– May: very stormy (123 weather alerts)

– June: first 20 days OK, then heavy rain (13 alerts)

– July: first 15 days OK, then stormy (21 alerts)

– August: first 7 days OK, then rainy (72 alerts)

So, knowing this, how could you have predicted a dry week during these months to book your holiday ?

🏖️ When Should You Visit?

If weather is absolutely critical to your enjoyment, minimise risk and come for two weeks between mid-January and mid-April. Otherwise, accept the uncertainty, reframe your expectations, and enjoy swimming in the rain.
